General Description / Special Programs
The Archaeology and Archaeological Science Program is administered by the Dept of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE). The BS and PhD are awarded by DMSE. Both degrees require equal balance between subjects in archaeology and related fields and in materials sci/engineering. Both are the first degrees of their kind in the US.

Research Facilities
Graduate and some undergraduate education and research are closely linked to the activities of the Boston-area consortium, Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology (CMRAE), administered by MIT. CMRAE coordinates major research labs in art conservation, ceramics, lithics, materials characterization, metallurgy, palaeoethnobotany, paleoenvironments, palynology, zooarchaeology, and remote sensing
