The undergraduate major is designed to expose students to a wide range of anthropological topics and information. The graduate program is designed to prepare students for research, teaching, and other professional careers.

Both within and beyond the Department of Anthropology, UW-Madison offers an exceptional research environment. Department labs are large and well-equipped. Biological research facilities include labs for human osteology and primate morphology. Undergraduate teaching labs are also available. Archaeology labs maintain comparative and research collections of faunal, floral, lithic and ceramic materials, microscopes, a thin section lab, Experimental Archaeology lab, Lab for Archaeological Chemistry, 3D modeling, etc. Students in all areas have access to computers and outstanding library collections. Graduate students may participate in the activities of UW’s eight federally-funded National Resource Centers, or Area Studies Centers: the Centers for African Studies, European Studies; Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia; South Asia; Southeast Asian Studies; East Asian Studies; Global Studies; and the Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program, as well as the Middle East Studies Program. These Centers and Programs, and affiliated UW Departments, teach more than 80 world languages, offer area-based courses and colloquia series, and invite graduate students to apply for Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. Graduate students may also affiliate with the Center for Culture, History, and Environment; the Center for Climatic Research; the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment; and other centers of the Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies as well as with the Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies. Each offers colloquia, events, and opportunities for graduate funding. Graduate students conduct fieldwork at sites worldwide.
