Graduate Fellowships provide tuition plus a living stipend for five years, contingent on continued appropriate progress toward the Ph.D. degree. Stipends and fellowships require service in the form of teaching assistance. Other university awards are given on a competitive basis to outstanding students. These include the James B. Duke Fellowships, International Fellowships, and Deans' Fellowships. The graduate program in Cultural Anthropology fosters interdisciplinary research and exchange and, in some cases, opens opportunities for funding with other Duke University programs and departments. These include African and African-American Studies (which offers a graduate certificate), the Duke/UNC Program in Latin American Studies (which offers a certificate), the Asian/Pacific Studies Institute, the Center for South Asian Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (which offers a graduate certificate), the Institute of Public Policy, the Medical School (PhD/MD), and programs in comparative Islamic, Russian and European studies.
