General Description / Special Programs

Research plays an important role in the department. Heavy emphasis is placed on prehispanic Native American archaeological studies in the Plains and the Southwestern United States. Instruction is supplemented by research and employment opportunities with the Blackwater Draw Museum, the Blackwater Draw National Historic Landmark archaeological site, and the Agency for Conservation Archaeology. Classes are small and feature hands-on work at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Areas of faculty expertise include: Paleoindian studies, Southwest archaeology, lithic analysis, zooarchaeology, GIS, quantitative methods, historic preservation, cultural resource management, bioarchaeology, ceramic analysis, and cultural anthropology.

The Chronicle of Higher Education identified Eastern New Mexico University as the fourth least expensive of 80 public Southwestern four-year universities for the 2016-2017 academic year. Graduate tuition and fees were reduced starting with the fall 2018 semester.

MA/ MS Requirements 32-35 hours of course work plus a thesis OR an internship and research project. Our graduate program prepares students for a career in public or private archaeology or to pursue a doctoral degree. All graduate courses are offered in person so students receive hands-on experience in the skills needed to succeed in the discipline. Our graduate program welcomes students who are interested in starting a second career or who have been working for a while and are ready to move forward by earning a master's degree as well as students coming right out of a bachelor's degree program.

Support Opportunities

Graduate assistantships are available for qualified students. They provide a stipend for working in the department and waive the out-of-state portion of tuition so the student pays the resident rate. Some hourly positions are also available in the department.
